Family Concerts

Visual delights and audience participation make these fun-loving concerts a joy for all ages! Our Family Concert series introduces Bay Area children ages three through twelve to a wide range of classical music, setting the stage for a lifelong appreciation of this engaging art form. We also feature guest performances from highly accomplished youth soloists and community arts performers. And as part of our Side-by-Side Program, young musicians from the area’s best music schools and ensembles are invited to rehearse and perform onstage alongside our professionals.
Admission is free to all concertgoers! Seating is first come, first served (no tickets). Concerts are generally 45 to 60 minutes in length. Doors open 30 minutes before concert time.
Our 2012–2013 season of Family Concerts is complete. Please check again soon for our 2013–2014 preview!
Show Programs Presented Earlier This Season Berkeley Ballet Theater's Youth Company Let the music move you! Watch the amazing young dancers from the Berkeley Ballet Theater transform the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra’s notes into graceful leaps and turns, then come onto the stage to learn a step or two yourself! No experience necessary—just follow your youngster and pretend no one’s watching. Kaila Flexer & Gari Hegedus Come with us to the cradle of civilization to explore the lively, lilting music of Turkey and Greece and to hear new music inspired by these traditions. Your guides, Kaila Flexer (fiddle) and Gari Hegedus (oud, saz, and other stringed instruments) of the musical duo Teslim, join the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra for an exciting program with unusual instruments, rhythms, and scales that will likely have you dancing in the isles—ahem, aisles. Photo © Mark Kitaoka + Tracy Martin Meet the string, woodwind, and brass instruments that make up a modern-day orchestra. Use your ears—not your eyes—to guide you on this voyage into the land of vibrating strings, buzzing reeds, and resonating tubes. Learn why a trombone has a slide, a bassoon has a butt joint, and the viola is better than the violin!
