Battle of the Romantics: Beethoven vs. Rossini
Sun, Mar 22 4pm
Golden Gate Club, San Francisco
Who will win the Battle of the (18th) Century? In one corner, the most famous musician in Europe, the toast of every town, favorite of connoisseur and commoner alike, straight from Naples, Italy: Gioachino Rossini, master of comic opera. In the other corner, Ludwig van Beethoven, defiantly shaking his mighty fist at the injustices of the world and declaring, “there are many queens, but there is only one Beethoven”. His symphonies are shocking, his piano sonatas much too difficult, and his string quartets utterly incomprehensible… but aren’t these the marks of his genius?
Join the fun and choose a side as the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra dukes it out, led in musical merriment by music director Ben Simon with special guests Brian Thorsett (tenor) and Heidi Moss (soprano). Please don your cloaks and capes and join us at the Presidio’s stunning Golden Gate Club for our most important fundraising event of the season.
